Blu Haus Blooms
Dahlias

Annual Tuber sale
begins Saturday, March 21!

At Blu Haus Blooms, growing dahlias is treated as both a precise science and a high-art form, resulting in a landscape defined by architectural beauty and vibrant saturation.

The process begins with patience, nesting tubers into nutrient-rich, well-draining earth only after the spring chill has fully retreated.

Producing exhibition-quality blooms for seasonal bouquets while simultaneously ensuring the health of the tubers requires a delicate balance of energy management. At Blu Haus Blooms, we view the flower and the tuber as two sides of the same coin: the bloom is the season’s immediate reward, while the tuber is the investment for next year’s legacy.

Why Blu Haus Dahlia tubers?

Each tuber we sell has been grown with care right here in Lime Ridge, Wis. We take pride in our attention to each plant.

  • Inspect Immediately: Open your package upon arrival to allow airflow. Check for any signs of rot or extreme softness immediately. (Contact if you see any!)
  • Ideal Conditions: Store in a cool, dark, and frost-free place (40–50°F). A basement or an unheated garage is often perfect.
  • Humidity Control: Keep them in the plastic bags they were shipped in to maintain moisture. However, if they look shriveled, a very light spritz of water can help; if they seem too moist, open the bag to increase airflow.
  • Wait for Warm Soil: Dahlias are sensitive to cold. We’ve had the best luck waiting until our soil temp is 60 degrees, typically mid-to-late May in the Midwest.
  • The “Tomato Rule”: A good rule of thumb is to plant your dahlias at the same time you would transplant tomatoes into your garden.
  • Space: At least 18 inches apart.
  • Add support: Dahlias get big and bushy; they benefit from support from a stake or netting.
  • Sun & Soil: Choose a spot with at least 6–8 hours of full sun and well-draining soil.
  • Depth: Plant tubers horizontally, about 4–6 inches deep, with the “eye” or sprout facing upward.
  • Hold the Water: Do not water heavily until you see the first green shoots emerge above the soil, as overwatering dormant tubers can cause them to rot.
